India is a fascinating country with so many incredible places to see. It is really hard to list the top tourist places in India and it is certainly based on personal preference. India is such a big county and I surely have missed some awesome places but here are some that I think make the list for Top Tourist Places in India!
India’s capital city is where most first time travelers will fly into and it can be quite the shock. Delhi is home to many mosques, forts and other monuments that represent India’s history especially in Old Delhi. The majestic Red Fort in Old Delhi is a must see! Being one of the top tourist places in India, there are a lot of scams, here are is my post on what to expect when arriving in Dehli!
Situated between two of the world’s largest mountain ranges, Leh is an increasingly popular place for trekking! Few tourist places in India are said to be hassle free for travelers but Leh seems to have that reputation. Needless to say, it’s on my Bucket List!
Mysore is one of the most popular tourist places in India south because of the royal heritage, the spectacular monuments and stunning buildings. It’s a thriving center for the production of silk, sandalwood and incense which attracts tourist to its markets. Also, Mysore is the birthplace of Ashtanga yoga which is becoming increasingly popular worldwide!
Home of the Golden Temple and spiritual center of the Sikh region, Amritsar is an increasingly popular pilgrimage and tourist destination. The Golden temple houses and feeds thousands every day as they make their pilgrimage north.
Traditionally used for transportation and trade, the Kerala Backwaters have become a popular tourist destination. The rivers, lakes and manmade waterways can be explored by boat from a day trip to week houseboat excursions with a guide and chef; anything is possible!
India’s number one beach destination known for its party scene and westernized community. Goa has many good hotels, cheap food and beautiful sandy beaches to relax on!
The home of the spectacular Taj Mahal. Need I say more? This is one of the most iconic tourist places in India!
Said to be the most romantic city in India, Udaipur is no doubt a top tourist place in India. Known for its lakes and palaces, especially the famous City Palace. Catch a great view of the palace from the Karni Mata Rope Way cable car! I was there during the Ganesh festival and was lucky to experience the wild celebrations that spread across the city!
The most spiritual city in India and is quite unique to say the least. The river banks of the Ganges are lined with ghats where many rituals take places like bathing and human cremation. A sunrise boat tour is a must do!
Situated in Rajasthan’s remote westernmost corner near the border with Pakistan, Jaisalmer is the iconic desert city of India. It is known as the Golden City, named after the high yellow sandstone walls of the Jaisalmer Fort. Here you can explore the fort, take in all the history and even go on a camel safari in the desert!
Known as the birthplace and the world capital of: Yoga. Rishikesh is located in the foothills of the Himalayas on the Ganges river and is a major destination for western spiritual seekers. I spent 5 days there practicing Yoga and would have loved to stay longer!
